DVC Letter O' The Day

Secrets and lies will all come into the light one day. Which side will you be on? Your review of the "Da Vinci Code" tells me you are on the WRONG side. The Dark Side, as it may be called.

As a women, you should know better in your heart.
It's clear someone has poisoned, and controlled your thoughts
in this matter. Enough is enough, so think for yourself.

OPEN your mind now, while you still can.

sincerely awake and aware,

(Name Withheld)

Right! Think for yourself and listen to ME!

Amy,

It was charitable to withhold the writer's name.

Oh my Lord, and I though my mail was freaky on occasion.

Peace, Amy.

Condolences. Sounds like the same person who last told me I was going to hell for being a Catholic. Don't let it spoil your day.

That letter is so stupid that it must be satire.

Posted by: Karl at Jan 6, 2004 2:05:35 PM

How bizarre.
Did you respond to her letter, Amy? I wouldn't know where to begin..

Posted by: Lynn at Jan 6, 2004 2:26:02 PM

Further demonstration of the unbreakable linkage between ignorance and arrogance.

Translation:

"Why can't you be as smart..."

Ah, never mind. It's been done.

Cheers,

They forgot to add: Repent! The end is near! Don't be Left Behind!

I know this person needs prayers, but so do you for having to put up with this kind of thing...

Posted by: Cheryl at Jan 6, 2004 3:27:29 PM

Please tell us you responded with something "Star Wars" like:

"It is too late for me... You don't know the power of the dark side! I must obey my master!"

Running a blog must be a riot... :)

The scary part about that email is that the person who wrote it is a "true believer." And we can rest assured the person is not lonely.

Just goes to emphasize the power of the pen. Dealing with The Da Vinci Heresy is difficult and time-consuming, as I'm sure Sandra and Carl must know.

Posted by: Carrie at Jan 6, 2004 6:08:31 PM

Look at the bright side.

If you replace "review of the 'Da Vinci Code'" with "reassignment of Father Weinberger" and "women" with "bishop," you have an excellent letter to send Bishop Grahmann.

Be happy that the letter writer was not 'Name Withheld, SJ' or '+ Name Withheld.'

And the letter writer doesn't express a whit of compassion for Saddam Hussein.

Tell the writer to "stay away from the brown acid". They'll understand.

I'm jealous. Am I not a woman, too?

Posted by: Sandra Miesel at Jan 6, 2004 6:31:22 PM

As a woman, we've been fed a lot of SH*T from many sources, but it's not Rome to fear.

Fear messages from:
Feminists
Abortionists
Pro-Contraceptive types
Diet Ads

All listed above have promised us good life, good health and empowerment. All their promises actually lead to greif.

The Church - the True Church - not the one in DVC, empowers us to be what God made us:
Women of God
Women of Grace
Women of Courage
Women comfortable with our bodies
Women of servitude to others
Women who respect ourselves
Women who are intellegent enough to understand the difference between what God intended for us and Men and Satan's temtations

There was a "Da Vinci" believer,
Who knew that the Church would deceive her,
'bout Christ’s wedding bands,
And His Gnostic plans,
And how St. Paul's an over achiever!

Posted by: John Hearn at Jan 6, 2004 8:06:08 PM

John writes:

There was a "Da Vinci" believer,
Who knew that the Church would deceive her,
'bout Christ’s wedding bands,
And His Gnostic plans,
And how St. Paul's an over achiever!

To which I would add:

So take your Da Vinci and Burn it
Forget about trying to discern it
The book is pure trash
Writ to generate cash
Far better the sooner you learn it.

I see why the early Church took up the cudgels against the Gnostics. Not only are they bats they are insufferable as well.

Posted by: Donald R. McClarey at Jan 6, 2004 10:06:30 PM

Oh brother. This letter-writer obviously forgot to read "Da Vince Code for Dummies" in which the Da Vince Code is revealed as dumb, written for dummies.

Posted by: Nancy at Jan 6, 2004 11:18:12 PM

The reason the Gnostics become "insufferable" is that they believe they have direct contact with God. If you talk to God, and God tells you that what you have come to believe is right, you then think you can "teach" all those other poor slobs who don't have the privileges you enjoy. And no one can tell you something is the will of God if it contradicts what you have come to believe.

That's why Gnosticism is considered to be the "synthesis of all heresies" and why the early Church expended so much effort to wipe it out.

Among the Gnostics, there is no doctrine. Everyone is supposed to seek out the Truth for themselves. Two contrary ideas can be held in tandem with no difficulty.

Cathy, your comments are awesome!

Amy,thanks for sharing. This is another in a long line of proofs for the existence of invincible ignorance. God can write straight enen with lines as crooked as this poor woman's.

Several of us commenters have taken the approach in this thread of rolling our eyes at this name-withheld letter-writer (NWLW).

But I think if the NWLW were to stumble upon this thread -- which is not unlikely, since he/she is one of Amy's readers -- he/she would feel insulted and demeaned. (To which some may reply, "Well no duh -- because what he/she said was dumb. Has our culture fallen so hard for tolerance that we can't correct the ignorant for fear of offending them?")

But can we not correct in a way that minimizes insult? For instance, instead of saying, "Oh brother, I feel bad for that loon," might we not instead take the time to approach the NWLW's comments as an opportunity to further explain our point of view, welcome the NWLW to engage in discussion, and echo the dignity with which Christ would treat him/her?

After all, I'm sure we're all guilty of the same thing we're accusing the NWLW of -- let's call it a statement of incorrectness (SOI) -- every now and again. And when I make my SOIs, I would hope the angels up in heaven don't snicker and roll their eyes.
