Benedict is thinking to himself: "Hoo boy, there's no way now this isn't gonna end up on Novus Ordo Watch..."
(And I doubt the fair Amy could ever have looked like that, not even in the '70s...)

Hmmmm... that picture should give attendees ideas about how dressing properly increases their chances for a Papal photo-op.
BTW - Yiddish proverb: What soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul.

Ever see the clip of JP II laughing during a clown's performance early in his papacy?
Watching him laugh was delightful....

I think it's nice that the pope agreed to meet with Pat Robertson...
Posted by: Brett | January 18, 2006 at 11:10 AM
Pat Robertson? I thought that was the Episcopal Presiding Heresiar--er-- Bishop. Someone call Trinity Wall Street, their Rector has swum the Tiber!
Posted by: Christopher | January 18, 2006 at 11:36 AM
That was my first thought when I saw the picture, Matthew. The folks at NOW must be salivating over how they can manipulate this pic.

How did a Democratic member of the Senate Judiciary Committee get an audience with the pope ?
Posted by: Ed | January 18, 2006 at 12:19 PM
Something tells be that BXVI doesn't eat this kind of stuff up the way JPII did... Just sayin'.
Posted by: Mike | January 18, 2006 at 12:35 PM
This had "preventable" written all over it, imo.
Posted by: AmericanPapist | January 18, 2006 at 12:43 PM
Why would you want to prevent this? JPII HUMANIZED the Pope. He gave the Pope a caring human face and he gave us an EXPERIENCE of the Papacy that none other had the guts to.
Benedict would be wise to learn from that example...looks like he is.

"Zank you, Reverend, for der chance to appear on der Evangelist Netvork. Zo ven vill you book mine show- after der blonde freulein from der Tampa Bay or before Herr Robertson?"
Posted by: Gerard E. | January 18, 2006 at 01:02 PM
I don't know... he (the Pope) doesn't look particularly enthusiastic. He's not even making eye contact as he shakes hands. He has that "Yeah yeah nice to meet you goodbye" look.
Posted by: hieronymus | January 18, 2006 at 01:04 PM
People! This is not a liturgy! The reason that restorationist dreams are dead in the water is because many are finding that its proponents are culture vulture snobs - something which Benedict XVI is NOT.
Amy, just exactly WHAT are you saying? I don't always agree with Mike Hayes, but on this one he's hit it out of the park!
Posted by: Tom Haessler | January 18, 2006 at 01:22 PM
Tom.
It's a joke. I think sometimes you people don't quite understand how many of my posts/comments are decidely un-serious.
I don't think Tom's comment was directed at me, but at AmericanPapist.

"slide show for the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday?"
Uh, that was my local parish last year. Oh and it was a social justice Stations of the Cross.
Posted by: Janet C | January 18, 2006 at 01:44 PM
Clowns just freak me out. ICK.
Janet C., what does a "social justice Stations of the Cross" look like? Just curious.
Posted by: Nerina | January 18, 2006 at 01:48 PM
I'm not bothered by it, it's just sort of funny.
Posted by: Matthew of the Holy Whapping | January 18, 2006 at 01:57 PM
At least they're not concelebrating, eh? I don't see any big deal, the Pope had dinner with Kung, right?
Posted by: St. Jimbob of the Apokalypse | January 18, 2006 at 02:06 PM
I'm with Nerina on this. Clowns are creepy.
Posted by: Dennis | January 18, 2006 at 02:10 PM
Folks -
my comment was a joke too, so chill out.
sorry for not adding an emoticon after it to make that more clear...

More pictures: here. Nice of the caption to indicate that the Pope is the one on the right, in case anyone got confused.
Other circus members. Are they in Da Vinci Code?
More pictures.
These lads did not make the cut for the circus.

How funny! On today's www.catholicexchange.com site there is an article by John McNichol regarding a photo he cherishes of a clown kissing the hand of JPII. In it he says, "G. K. Chesterton noted that one of the appeals of the Church to him was her ability to embrace simultaneously very contradictory people and expressions of Christian faith." Its a wonderful article and if you ask me, the two clowns look like they are related! You can read it at http://www.catholicexchange.com/.

Oh, Amy, I am so with you on my church-related activities in the 70's. I wish I could have a big eraser and do that era over in my life. But, then again, I guess it's part of the pilgrimage. I remember loving the folk music at Mass, the touchy feely stuff and the "groovy" religious brother who prepped us for Confirmation. The downside is that I had no worthwhile catechesis at all! That is, if listening to Jesus Christ Superstar doesn't count. Ah well, it did lay the groundwork for a gung ho reconversion and many "suprised by truth" moments.

All clowns look like they're related.
Posted by: hieronymus | January 18, 2006 at 03:39 PM
Amy,
You're not going to start clown-bashing again, are you? It's so hurtful.
And hieronymus, that's a very racist thing to say.

Whew! At first I thought someone was proposing new uniforms for the Swiss Guards!

Nice to see the pope meeting with representatives of the episcopal church.

I didn't know they had clowns in Sweden!
Posted by: inhocsig | January 18, 2006 at 09:51 PM
He is wearing the house colors of the Swedish monarchy, isn't he?
Posted by: Matthew of the Holy Whapping | January 18, 2006 at 10:35 PM
Yep. Somebody told that Swedish clown that "Abba" means "Papa"!
Posted by: inhocsig | January 18, 2006 at 11:46 PM
"All clowns look like they're related."
Yes, inbreeding explains a lot.
Posted by: Anne-Marie | January 18, 2006 at 11:52 PM
Clowns are evil... I don't know about all of you, but I suspect this is a conspiracy by the Freemasons to rule the Church. Scary... very scary.
