I've heard that about Vatican II, and not only about the American bishops. It certainly raises a practical question about how much the Council Fathers really got what was going on. Even as to the documents themselves, I wonder how many bishops had enough Latin to really comprehend it all. Maybe it's best not to ask such questions . . .

The synods of bishops now are conducted a la UN functions, I think, with most "interventions" in the vernacular and simultaneous translation of some type; though there are a few old fossils who insist on Latin.

And that's not true about the speedy retirement of the progressives; Walter Sullivan of Richmond, for example, stayed on 9 months past 75.
